Are you a Mental Health First Aider?

10 October 2022

Do you think you would benefit from learning how to identify, understand, and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue?

Many of us know someone who has suffered from mental health issues and have maybe been unsure as to how we can help and support them. Mental health first aid training gives us:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the common risk factors and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support from various places including:
    • Self-help resources
    • Support through an employer
    • NHS
    • A mixture of different support strategies

As we enter our sixth year of delivering Mental Health First Aid, we have seen first-hand the benefits this training provides and how it strengthens the overall wellbeing support for employees. At Ouch, we deliver a wide range of mental health first aid courses:

Exciting update! As MHFA England launches its updated Mental Health First Aid course, Ouch is thrilled to be able to offer this to new and existing clients. The new course also comes with ‘a unique and unrivalled support package for Mental Health First Aiders’ (MHFA England, September 2022). This includes 24/7 digital support through the MHFAider Support App® which has a resource library full of toolkits, guidance, and animations. The app will also have a 24/7 text support service as well as reminders and secure conversation logging.

We understand that specific industries benefit from different training products, which is why we have launched our NEW Drivers CPC Mental Health & Wellbeing Awareness course catered towards those within the drivers’ industry. Being a JAUPT registered centre, our course enables drivers the ability to claim 7 hours towards their CPC training whilst gaining important knowledge and skills in relation to mental health and wellbeing. This is in addition to our current range of Driver CPC courses which you can view here.

We have delivered mental health first aid training to a diverse range of long-standing clients including AFC Bournemouth, Manchester United FC, Iconic Luxury Hotels, RNLI, LUSH and BOFA International. We are also proud to support local small and medium sized businesses such as KW Engineering, BH Hospitality, Dorset Wildlife Trust and many more. The large scale of organisations taking the opportunity to train their staff members in this subject shows the enormous support for employee mental health and wellbeing and the level of importance it holds.

We recognise the challenges that people have faced over recent years, in both work life and home life and looking after our own, and others, mental health has never seemed more appropriate. Mental health first aid training provides us with the ability to be fully understanding and signpost people to the relevant sources of support. It also allows employers and mental health first-aiders to properly support those who have been diagnosed with any mental health illness.
