What is mental health first aid training?

Mental health first aid training gives people the skills to recognise when someone might be struggling and to offer the right kind of support. Think of it as the mental health equivalent of physical first aid, you’re not expected to diagnose or treat, but you’ll know how to respond calmly and confidently.

This training is designed for workplaces, community groups, and anyone who wants to make a positive difference. It helps create safer, more supportive environments where people feel understood.

What does mental health first aid training cover? 

During the course, participants learn how to: 

  • Spot early signs of mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, or depression. 
  • Recognise what good mental health looks like and understand the factors that influence wellbeing. 
  • Start a conversation in a way that feels safe and supportive. 
  • Use active listening skills, ask open questions and provide reassurance in a calm, empathetic manner. 
  • Provide initial help and guide someone towards professional support. 
  • Understand crisis situations, including panic attacks or suicidal thoughts, and respond appropriately. 
  • Understand a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder and psychosis. 
  • Understand the boundaries of the Mental Health First Aider role, including confidentiality and when to escalate concerns. 
  • Promote recovery and encourage long-term wellbeing, resilience and ongoing support. 
  • Look after their own mental wellbeing and recognise when they may need support themselves. 

The training also explores how to look after your own wellbeing, because supporting others starts with taking care of yourself.

Why is this Mental Health First Aid Training important for the workplaces?
