Emergency Paediatric First Aid (6 hr)

Overview

Completing this course will provide candidates with the essential knowledge and skills to administer emergency paediatric first aid in various settings. It teaches basic life-support skills and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to enable candidates to deal with life-threatening emergencies.

Who needs this qualification?

The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course has been developed for candidates working in childcare, or those otherwise responsible for caring for infants and children, who are not required to have an Ofsted/EYFS qualification but want to learn about emergency paediatric first aid.

Why is this training important?

The national standards for first aid in childcare settings state that ‘at least one person with a current paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present.’ Additionally, at least one person with a current paediatric first aid certificate must accompany every outing.

  • The role and responsibility of a first aider
  • Incident and casualty management
  • Unconscious casualties
  • Recovery position and child and baby resuscitation (CPR)
  • Seizures and febrile convulsions
  • Choking
  • Minor and severe bleeding
  • Shock

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Assess an emergency situation safely
  • Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Manage an infant or child who is having a seizure
  • Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is choking
  • Provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
  • Understand how to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
