First Aid Annual Refresher Courses

We offer First Aid Annual Refresher courses in Manchester, Dorset, In-House and Online

Overview

First Aid Annual Refresher is a training session conducted on a yearly basis for individuals who have previously completed a comprehensive first aid course. The annual refresher aims to reinforce and update the knowledge and skills of learners in first aid techniques, ensuring that they remain competent and confident in their ability to respond effectively to emergencies. These refreshers are particularly important as first aid protocols and guidelines may change over time, and regular practice helps maintain readiness and proficiency.

Who needs the First Aid Annual Refresher qualification?

This course is designed for those with a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate.

The course does not renew first aid certificates or extend the validity period of certificates. It is for practice and refreshing skills only. Those approaching expiry of their current first aid certificate will need to attend a requalification course. You can use our Requalification Checker to find the relevant course and find out more.

Why is First Aid Annual Refresher training important?

The HSE recommends that those who hold a valid Emergency First aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate should update their skills and knowledge every 12 months to keep up to date with any changes that happen between completing their first aid qualification and requalifying 3 years later.

First Aid Refresher Course FAQs

The First Aid Annual Refresher is a half-day course lasting approximately 3 hours. It’s designed to revisit essential skills such as CPR, using an AED, and managing an unconscious casualty.
While the refresher course itself does not renew your original first aid qualification, it is recommended annually by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to maintain skills between your initial qualification and the required full requalification every three years.
The HSE recommends that all qualified first aiders undertake refresher training once every year during the three-year validity period of their original certificate.
Some theory-based refresher training can be delivered online, but for full effectiveness and to meet best practice standards, it’s advised to take part in a practical, in-person session—especially for key hands-on skills like CPR and recovery position.
Skills like CPR and AED use can fade over time. Annual refresher training helps first aiders stay confident and competent, ensuring they’re ready to act quickly and effectively in an emergency.
No. The annual refresher does not extend the validity of your First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work certificate. A full requalification must be completed every three years.
Anyone with a valid First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work certificate can benefit from refresher training, especially those acting as designated workplace first aiders.
