Mental Health First Aid Courses

We offer Mental Health First Aid courses in Manchester, Dorset, In-House and Online

Overview

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course designed to provide individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to offer initial assistance to someone experiencing a mental health crisis or struggling with mental health issues. MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

In the same way we would provide first aid to someone with a physical injury, a mental health first aider can offer the same initial support using the tools gained within the course.

The training is delivered by an experienced and qualified MHFA England instructor, using a combination of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities.

Who needs the Mental Health First Aid qualification?

The Mental Health First Aid course is suitable for anyone who would like to learn more about mental health, some of the common mental health issues people may experience and support co-workers.

Why is Mental Health First Aid training important?

Mental health education empowers people to care for themselves and others by reducing stigma through understanding. Ouch hope to break down barriers to the support that people may need to stay well, recover, or manage their symptoms – to thrive in learning, work and life.

Employers have a ‘duty of care’. This means they must do all they reasonably can to support the mental health, safety, and well-being of their employees.

Mental Health First Aid FAQs

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a globally recognised training programme that equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide immediate support to someone experiencing mental health challenges or crises. Similar to physical first aid, MHFA aims to offer initial help and guidance, but for mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, or psychosis. It empowers participants to recognise warning signs, provide non-judgemental support, and direct individuals to appropriate professional resources or services.
In an MHFA course, participants learn to identify common mental health conditions, understand their impact, and offer practical, immediate support to someone in need. Key topics include recognising early signs of mental illness, understanding mental health stigma, and learning active listening techniques. The course also covers handling mental health emergencies such as panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, or psychotic episodes, as well as guidance on connecting individuals with professional help. Additionally, participants gain insight into promoting positive mental health and well-being within their communities or workplaces.

A Mental Health First Aid certificate is typically valid for three years from the date of completion. To ensure participants stay up-to-date with the latest best practices and knowledge, it is recommended to take a refresher course after this period. Refresher sessions are shorter, focusing on reinforcing key skills and updating participants on any changes in mental health approaches or legislation.

The standard Mental Health First Aid course usually takes two days to complete, with each session lasting around 6-7 hours.

While Mental Health First Aid is not a legal requirement in the UK, it is strongly encouraged as part of a proactive approach to workplace health and safety. Employers have a legal duty of care to support employees’ mental well-being under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. By implementing MHFA training, organisations demonstrate their commitment to fostering a healthy workplace culture and fulfilling their responsibility to support mental health, which can also help reduce absenteeism and improve productivity.
